IAM Union Congratulates Local 709 Members on Lockheed Martin C-130 Program’s 70th Anniversary

The International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers (IAM) celebrates the 70th anniversary of the Lockheed Martin C-130 program and congratulates IAM Local 709 members at Lockheed Martin’s Marietta, Ga., plant for their significant milestone. IAM Local 709 has been at the forefront of building this iconic aircraft, a testament to the dedication and skill of the Marietta workforce.

“IAM Local 709 members in Marietta have consistently produced superior aircraft,” said IAM Southern Territory General Vice President Craig Martin. “These jobs are crucial not only for this community but also for supporting jobs across Georgia and the nation. We are proud of our members’ work and look forward to celebrating future milestones.”

The IAM has been actively working on Capitol Hill to maintain the current production levels of the C-130J model. A record 68 members of Congress wrote a letter supporting this effort.

“The C-130J Super Hercules is the world’s most capable tactical airlifter,” wrote the members of Congress. “Ensuring a stable production line is essential to meet current and future Department of Defense requirements. This will help preserve 380 suppliers across 36 states and 27,200 direct and indirect jobs, generating over $3.7 billion in economic impact.”

The C-130J is the only U.S.-made airlift currently in production, and a stable and efficient production line is vital in supporting current and future Department of Defense and allied nation airlift requirements. In addition, the C-130J production line provides thousands of high-skilled Machinists Union jobs and supports more than 27,000 jobs across its nationwide supply chain.

“IAM Local 709 represents thousands of workers who build one of the world’s greatest aircraft, keeping our nation safe and providing relief globally,” said IAM International President Brian Bryant. “Our members should take pride in their role in this significant achievement and their continued contribution to providing good jobs that strengthen our nation’s economy.”

The International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers (IAM) is among the largest industrial trade unions in North America and represents nearly 600,000 active and retired members in the manufacturing, aerospace, defense, airlines, transportation, shipbuilding, woodworking, health care, and other industries.
