(BAKERSFIELD, Calif.) – Thirty drivers at High Desert Distributing in Bakersfield, Calif., will now be represented by Teamsters Local 87. The drivers voted for strong union representation to secure higher wages, better benefits, and improved working conditions.
“We are proud to welcome our new members to the Teamsters,” said John Moralez, Secretary-Treasurer of Teamsters Local 87. “The union busters tried like hell to break this group, but they stood strong and united. We are committed to helping them win a contract that addresses years of workplace issues and brings them respect.”
“This organizing win sends a powerful message to the company that our new members will fight for the pay and protections they’ve long needed,” said Jeff Padellaro, Director of the Teamsters Brewery, Bakery, and Soft Drink Conference. “They know the best way to secure a better future for their families is through a strong Teamsters contract.”
High Desert is a part of the Reyes Beverage Group, the largest beer distributor in the United States, delivering over 336 million cases per year. Workers at High Desert join thousands of Teamsters across the country working in the beer, spirits, and non-alcoholic beverage distributing business.
“We joined the Teamsters because we know our worth as drivers,” said Rithy Sy, a Class A driver and member of Local 87. “We want fair wages and a better future for our families. We are united and ready to fight for a first contract that we deserve.”
