Houston Local 2198 Young Workers Honor Black Labor Legacy, Ignite Next Generation of Solidarity

This Black History Month, the Local 2198 Young Workers Committee didn’t just celebrate history — they brought it to life.

Members handed out specially curated Black History Bags at the United Airlines Reservation office in Houston filled with powerful literature highlighting the role of Black workers in the IAM Union and the unwavering solidarity shown in the fight for justice, dignity, and equality on the job. These materials served as a reminder that our union’s strength has always been rooted in inclusion, courage, and collective action.

“Black History Month is a powerful reminder that the rights and protections we have today were built on the courage, sacrifice and determination of Black workers who refused to accept injustice,” said IAM Air Transport Territory General Vice President Richie Johnsen. “I’m incredibly proud of the Local 2198 Young Workers Committee for honoring that legacy and ensuring the next generation understands that our union’s strength comes from solidarity, education and standing together. Their leadership is helping carry forward the fight for dignity, equality and respect for every IAM member.”

The committee also hosted a labor film screening of “Pullman and the Railroad Rebellion – A Chicago Stories Documentary.” The film spotlighted the Pullman Porters and the profound impact of the Black labor movement on the broader civil rights movement. It underscored the leadership and legacy of labor giant A. Philip Randolph, whose organizing not only transformed working conditions but helped lay the foundation for civil rights victories nationwide.

The message was clear: the fight for workers’ rights and civil rights has always been interconnected.

Local 2198 Young Workers Committee Chair Quintarius Oliver, Co-Chair Eva Brooks and Francisco Franco are dedicated to educating, organizing and strengthening solidarity for the next generation.
