Transportation Communications Union/IAM (TCU/IAM) National Vice President Katrina Coleman was recently appointed to serve on the AFL-CIO Executive Council.
The AFL-CIO Executive Council is comprised of the federation’s two top officers and 55 vice presidents — democratically elected officials who together represent nearly 15 million AFL-CIO members. The Council is responsible for guiding the federation’s work, and all officers’ responsibilities are set out in the AFL-CIO constitution.
Coleman, a nearly four-decade veteran of the labor movement, brings a career defined by frontline advocacy, grassroots organizing, and a deep commitment to TCU/IAM members.
“Congratulations to Sister Coleman on this well-deserved honor,” said IAM International President Brian Bryant. “Katrina’s election as National Vice President is a testament to the strength she has shown throughout her career. She has been a strong advocate for our members. Her appointment to the AFL-CIO Executive Council is a moment of great pride not just for TCU/IAM, but for the entire labor movement. I am honored to welcome her to the Council. She will bring that same fierce dedication to every room she enters.”
Coleman’s union journey began in 1986, when she was hired as a clerk for Amtrak in Philadelphia. Her involvement in union activism took root there, laying the foundation for a career spanning local, regional, and national leadership roles.
In 2014, she was elected Local Chairperson of TCU/IAM Local 1351, a position she held through the end of 2022. Two years later, in 2016, she was appointed Assistant National Representative for TCU/IAM Unit 86 and subsequently elevated to National Representative — roles in which she supported Amtrak and SEPTA local lodges and represented members across the system.
In 2022, Coleman founded FIERCE, TCU/IAM’s Women’s Committee, creating a formal structure to elevate issues facing Local Chairwomen and to connect union values with meaningful community outreach and service.
She has also served on the TCU/IAM Education Committee, mentoring new Local Chairpersons at Leadership classes and helping build the next generation of union leaders.
“Katrina has built her career on fearless and compassionate representation of our members,” said TCU/IAM National President Matt Hollis. “She will do a great job in this role because she does the hard work, asks the tough questions, and never loses sight of who she is fighting for. TCU/IAM members are proud of this new opportunity that allows our union to help chart the future of the labor movement.
