The IAM Union (International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers) mourns the passing of U.S. Rep. David Scott (D-Ga.), who passed away at the age of 80. Congressman Scott served Georgia’s 13th Congressional District for more than two decades. He was not only a good friend of tens of thousands of IAM members who call his home state home, but a strong ally to all working families.
“Rep. Scott was more than a friend to the IAM, he was a fighter for our members and their jobs,” said IAM Union International President Brian Bryant. “He understood, at his core, that strong unions mean strong communities, and he backed it up with action every single time it counted. I want to personally thank him for his strong advocacy of the C-130J program and for supporting our organizing campaign at Delta Air Lines. The IAM family has lost a true champion, and I ask all of our members to keep his family, his staff and the people of Georgia’s 13th District in their thoughts.”
Rep. Scott’s relationship with IAM members in Marietta extended well beyond the 13th District. He always found time to come speak to IAM delegates at the Georgia State Council of Machinists’ annual meetings. When IAM Local 709 members at Lockheed Martin in Marietta needed champions on Capitol Hill to protect the C-130J Super Hercules program, Rep. Scott was the one who showed up and offered his support. When tens of thousands of Delta Air Lines workers sought the freedom to organize without fear or retaliation, Congressman Scott stood alongside workers in their fight to join a union, calling on Delta to ensure workers remained free to make their own decisions without fear of reprisal or interference
The IAM extends its deepest condolences to Congressman Scott’s wife, Alfredia Aaron-Scott, their children, grandchildren, and the entire Scott family. We also extend our solidarity to his staff and to the constituents of Georgia’s 13th District, who are losing not just their representative, but a public servant who gave his life to making working families’ lives better.
