I grew up in a blue-collar Teamster union family in Peoria, Illinois, where I witnessed firsthand the struggles working families faced in the 1980s. I saw picket lines crossed at Caterpillar, and the closures of Pabst Blue Ribbon and Hiram Walker plants that once provided good-paying union jobs. Many of my high school friends expected steady careers at places like Keystone Steel Mill, only to see those jobs shipped overseas.
Back then, the President of Pabst Blue Ribbon lived in a gated community with a golf course, making 20 times what my father earned in 1968. Meanwhile, my family made do in a modest three-bedroom ranch house just a few miles away. My father never finished high school but supported our family on a single income. My mother stayed home to raise us until she became a teacher after Pabst closed and my father lost his job of over 35 years. My family has always been dedicated to service—military, police, and union work shaped our lives.
I was proud to be a member of the National Treasury Employees Union (NTEU) for 12 years before joining State Farm. I understand what it means to work hard and worry about making ends meet, especially when CEOs now make over 200 times the average worker’s salary.
