This month marks the 251st anniversary of the USPS, and it remains one of America’s most trusted public institutions. Every day, postal workers make sure that prescription medications, paychecks, ballots, packages, and letters get delivered to every home and business in the country.
Yet, the Postal Service faces serious threats. From financial challenges created by outdated laws to attacks on Vote-by-Mail and the possibility that postal leadership will prioritize corporate interests over public service, these threats all put our future at risk and raise the question, “What kind of Postal Service will America have in the future?”
On July 28, the APWU is holding a Protect Our Public Post Office National Day of Action, a nationwide call to defend one of America’s most trusted and treasured institutions — our public Postal Service. Across the country, postal workers and retirees, labor allies, and community members will come together to support a vibrant public Postal Service that serves every community, no matter the size or distance, urban or rural. The Postal Service has a mission, mandated by law, to serve every address, in every community. That is more than 170 million homes and businesses across the country. That is why protecting a strong, public Postal Service matters to all of us.
Our demands are clear; Americans deserve a Postal Service that:
- Remains public, financially secure, accountable to the people, and capable of serving every community for generations to come;
- Defends every eligible voter’s right to safely and securely vote by mail;
- Provides common-sense solutions to postal finances, giving the it the financial tools it needs to succeed; and
- Embodies a postal leadership that supports this vision
What’s at stake? A strong Postal Service means:
- Reliable, affordable mail service for every community.
- Secure delivery of election mail and prescription medications.
- Support for small businesses and local economies.
- Good union jobs that strengthen communities.
- A public institution that serves people, not corporate profits.
The Postal Service belongs to the people, not corporate interests. It is a service, not a business. For generations, post offices have bound the country together, supported local economies, protected democracy, and provided reliable services that private companies cannot and will not replicate.
APWU National leadership urges members and local and state unions to attend or host rallies and distribute informational flyers, host press events, organize postcard campaigns, and engage neighbors in conversations about why the Postal Service matters. Every event is an opportunity to remind the public that the Postal Service belongs to the American people and needs to be protected.
On July 28, stand up for our public Postal Service and invite the American people to stand with us. Together, we can ensure the Postal Service remains reliable, financially strong, and committed to serving every community for generations to come.
