Service & Solidarity Spotlight: Baltimore City Community College Faculty Members Ratify First-Ever Contract

Members of the United Academics of Maryland (UAM) Local 6628—an affiliate of American Federation of Teachers (AFT)-Maryland and the American Association of University Professors (AAUP)—who work at Baltimore City Community College (BCCC) have ratified their first union contract.

BCCC faculty are the seventh higher education bargaining unit represented by UAM to approve a deal after collective bargaining rights were granted to community college faculty in 2021.

“We’re very excited, especially since this has been an uphill battle for a little over 19 months,” AFT-Maryland President Kenya Campbell said. “There were some little challenges that we ran into, but the bargaining teams stood tall. They stuck with the process while working. I am very proud of the work that the team has put in to try to get their first-ever union contract.”
