Congress has responded to college athletes’ newfound power with bills in both the House and the Senate to “save college sports” from the athletes themselves.

Here are a few of the things this bill would do:
- Allow the NCAA to set the terms and conditions of work from one employer to the next and be shielded from antitrust liability for doing so.
- Cap athlete compensation and create new restrictions on how athletes can earn money from their own name, image and likeness.
- Halt progress on gender equity in sports and take away the most effective tool we have to continue to build women’s sports: collective bargaining.
- Lay down new obstacles to athletes’ efforts to form a union. And while it does provide some benefits for athletes, the bill makes it difficult to collectively bargain and win better terms in the future and would bust athletes’ union-organizing efforts that are already underway.

It’s no wonder that this bill has been endorsed by the employers: the mighty NCAA, the powerful college athletic conferences and some of the universities making the most money off their athletes’ labor.
