IAM Local 498 Rebuilds Locomotive to Honor Veterans

U.S. Marine Corps veteran and IAM Local 498 Machinist Sheldon Webster, alongside other IAM members at Metra, recently completed an ambitious project. Metra is the primary commuter rail system in the Chicago metropolitan area, serving the city of Chicago and its surrounding suburbs via the Union Pacific Railroad, BNSF Railway, and other railroads.

Webster and other IAM members restored an F-40PH locomotive dedicated to the U.S. Armed Forces and veterans. This labor-intensive endeavor is a tribute to the brave men and women who have served and continue to serve our country.

The project, which involved rebuilding the engine, rotating equipment, and running gear, showcased the technical skill and dedication of IAM Rail members. Each step in the restoration process reflected their commitment to honoring military service through craftsmanship and pride.

“This rebuild is our way of honoring those who have sacrificed for our country,” said Webster. “It’s about showing our gratitude and pride in the men and women who protect our freedom.”

Once back on the tracks, this locomotive will serve as a powerful symbol of the bond between the labor movement and the sacrifices of our nation’s veterans. The skilled hands of Local 498 have brought a piece of history back to life and have created a lasting tribute to those who protect the freedoms we cherish.
