Trenton, N.J., Dec. 5, 2024 – The New Jersey State AFL-CIO announced its support for the Motor Vehicle Open Recall Notice and Fair Compensation Act (A4380/S3309), a critical piece of legislation aimed at ensuring fair wages for automotive dealership mechanics across the state.
This bipartisan bill seeks to provide these skilled professionals with wages for warranty repair services that are equal to those for other repair services, fostering improved working conditions and enhancing the quality of life for mechanics and their families.
The New Jersey State AFL-CIO sent a letter to state legislators to consider this legislation.
“This bill would benefit car dealership mechanics by ensuring they receive the same wage warranty repair services as they do for all other repair services,” the New Jersey AFL-CIO wrote in the letter. “Our affiliated union, the International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers, represents hundreds of these workers and ensuring they are properly compensated is essential.”
The Motor Vehicle Open Recall Notice and Fair Compensation Act will positively impact not only the mechanics themselves but also their families and the communities they serve.
“Automotive technicians are the backbone of our vehicle maintenance system,” said IAM Eastern Territory General Vice President David Sullivan. “They work tirelessly to ensure our cars are safe and reliable, and it’s high time that their expertise and hard work are recognized and rewarded with fair compensation.”
The New Jersey State Council of Machinists and IAM Automotive Lodge 447 have been fervent advocates for this bipartisan piece of legislation and have urged New Jersey lawmakers to support it.
Similarly, IAM Local 701 achieved a significant victory at the end of the 2021 Illinois Legislative session with the passage and signing of Illinois House Bill 3940, which ensures fair payment for warranty repairs conducted by auto technicians in Illinois.
