IAM Union Local 498 and Fellow Rail Union Members Raise $1,300 in 8 Hours to Support Toys for Tots

In an incredible show of generosity and teamwork, IAM Union Local 498, who proudly serve as Machinists on the Metra commuter rail, joined forces with members from the Brotherhood Railway Carmen Division (BRC), American Railway Supervisors Association (ARASA), Transportation Communications Union (TCU/IAM), International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers (IBEW), Sheet Metal, Air, Rail, and Transportation Workers- Mechanical (SMART-Mech), and the National Conference of Firemen & Oilers (NCFO, SEIU) to make a difference in their community this holiday season. This coalition of rail workers raised an impressive $1,300 in just eight hours, using the funds to purchase 18 brand-new bicycles for the Toys for Tots program.

Led by Local Chairman Dave May, the effort showcased the unity and compassion of rail workers across multiple crafts, demonstrating their commitment to keeping the trains running and giving back to the communities they serve.

“We wanted to do something that would really make an impact,” said Chairman May. “A bicycle is more than just a toy—it’s a chance for a child to have fun, explore, and experience a bit of freedom and adventure. Knowing that 18 kids will wake up with a bike this Christmas is an amazing feeling.”

The collaboration among the unions highlights the shared values of solidarity and community engagement that define the labor movement. The Toys for Tots program, run by the U.S. Marine Corps Reserve, has been a long-standing tradition for bringing holiday cheer to less fortunate children. The participation of union members across Metra’s workforce added an extra layer of goodwill to the effort.

“This was a team effort, and it’s a testament to the strong bond we share as rail workers,” added Rob Shanahan, a representative from SMART-Mechanical. “When we come together, we can do incredible things.”

The rail unions’ donation is a shining example of how the labor movement continues to uplift communities while advocating for workers’ rights. It reminds us that the spirit of giving transcends crafts and titles.

Great job to IAM Union Local 498 and all the participating unions! Your contributions truly embody the spirit of giving and the values of solidarity.
