William P. Hackett is an experienced criminal defense attorney with more than twenty years defending and protecting his clients’ rights in the state courts of Michigan and the federal courts, in very serious criminal matters. His broader experience includes civil litigation, a variety of immigration cases, civil rights cases, and personal injury matters.
Mr. Hackett’s commitment to standing up for the underdog started early. He graduated from Detroit Redford High School and went on to Wayne State University, earning a Bachelor of Arts in History and Labor Studies. As an undergraduate he interned with Teamsters for a Democratic Union, a rank-and-file reform group within the Teamsters Union. In 1991 he enrolled at the Detroit College of Law, now Michigan State University College of Law, where he volunteered as an intern with the Maurice and Jane Sugar Center for Social and Economic Justice and was an active member of the National Lawyers Guild.
He graduated from the Detroit College of Law in 1994 and was admitted to the State Bar of Michigan in 2003. Today he lives in the Detroit area and enjoys spending time with his children and four grandchildren.
