Celebrating 250 Years: Milwaukee Honors the Postal Service

Milwaukee Area Local leaders Glenn Griggs, Larry Brown Jr., and Chris Czubakowski heeded APWU National’s call to secure proclamations honoring the U.S. Postal Service’s 250th anniversary and found success! The local union discovered something valuable beyond the framed documents now displayed in their union hall lobby: an opportunity to strengthen relationships and tell their story.

“Getting started was very straightforward,” said local business agent Chris Czubakowski. After reaching out to city hall, he was directed to a webpage with instructions. Czubakowski submitted sample language, received feedback, made final edits, and soon received a call to pick up the proclamation – framed and ready to display.

Milwaukee County proclamation was signed on Oct. 24, followed by the City of Milwaukee on Oct. 31. Both now serve as visible reminders of the Postal Service’s importance to the Milwaukee community.

“Politics isn’t left or right anymore, it’s top to bottom, us versus them,” he noted. And this proclamation is decidedly nonpartisan. A public Postal Service that serves every community, every small business, and everyone at an affordable rate is good for all of us. Securing these proclamations helped build crucial relationships with state and local entities while advancing the broader goals of the Grand Alliance.

In Milwaukee, the Postal Service means more than mail delivery. “On the frozen tundra, our customers rely on the mail as an essential service. Rain, sleet, or snow (and pandemics!) we get people their important mail,” Czubakowski explained. As the low-cost anchor for shipping services, the Postal Service provides affordable, universal service to everyone.

But the impact goes deeper. “We’re a classic working-class city,” he continued. “The Postal Service provides good union jobs. By having a public, unionized workforce, we contribute to the economy in Milwaukee and keep our town running. Good union jobs sustain communities – a rising tide lifts all ships.”

The framed proclamations in the Milwaukee union hall lobby now stand as a testament to both the Postal Service’s enduring value and the power of building relationships with local allies.
