Members of IAM Local 1725’s Human Rights Committee in Charlotte, N.C., led by Chair Mark Cain, recently joined forces with Hope Vibes of Charlotte to provide support for homeless individuals.
The local provided funds for committee members to make 100 sandwiches that they distributed to those in need. Then, with Hope Vibes of Charlotte, about 50 unhoused people were able to wash their belongings and shower.
“We try to do the best we can to provide knowledge and awareness to our members and others about the rights of other human beings and to help out when we can, because we are all so fortunate,” said Cain. “There are people out there who will tell you their stories of going from having everything to nothing. We just want to help them out the best we can and show them that people care. They appreciate it so much.”
Hope Vibes provides mobile showers, laundry services, and practical items to their homeless neighbors in Charlotte.
“We do this by going to where the people are. Our homeless neighbors live in tents, shelters, personal vehicles, as well as the streets of uptown and the suburbs,” says Hope Vibes’ website. “So we go where they are and provide the items and services they need to gain a bit of self-worth.”
“IAM Local 1725 is one of our leading Air Transport locals,” said IAM Air Transport Territory General Vice President Richie Johnsen. “They are known for taking the initiative and putting in the work to encourage activism and be present within the Charlotte community. We are incredibly proud of the work this local has done to bring in new members and get involved with the community.”
This is the second year that the Local collaborated with Hope Vibes for a community service project, and they did it in honor of the late IAM Grand Lodge Representative Maria Santiago Lillis.
The IAM designated Aug. 10 as “Maria Santiago Lillis Advocacy Day – A Commitment to Serve (ACTS)” in memory of the late Western Territory Grand Lodge Representative who was a tireless mentor and fierce advocate for workers’ rights, human rights, and social justice, tackling the most contentious issues with grace while treating everyone with dignity and respect.
