Don’t Let Them Close Your Post Office!

Across the country, hundreds of post offices are at risk of permanent closure, and the APWU is mobilizing to stop it. On the June APWU Livestream, APWU Executive Vice President Debby Szeredy hosted the show to talk about our campaign to fight back against post office closures. She invited APWU members from around the country to join and share their stories about why they are involved in the fight and how they have been successful.

More than 414 post offices in 48 states are currently on the USPS 2026 suspension list. Some have been shuttered for years, with several closures dating back to 2017. Last year alone, the Postal Service permanently closed 564 previously suspended locations. The APWU argues that these closures eliminate good-paying jobs, undermine universal mail service, and strip communities of a vital public resource.

“We are demanding that these post offices stay open to serve the communities who rely on us,” said Vice President Szeredy, who oversees the campaign. The union has launched a dedicated webpage at apwu.org/nopostofficeclosures where you can find a state-by-state suspension list, petitions, talking points, and an organizing toolkit.

The campaign has already achieved exciting victories. California Area Local 960 President Sara Wilson, Clerk Craft National Business Agent James Stevenson, Sacramento Area Legislative Director Local Rayni Ramirez, and APWU Auxiliary President Trisa Mannion joined to share how they are fighting back and winning back post offices in their communities.

We know that communities have the legal right to appeal post office closures to the Postal Regulatory Commission, but we can only fight back if they know that right exists. Getting the word out, Szeredy says, is the first step to winning. Watch the entire livestream at apwu.org/live, or visit apwu.org/nopostofficeclosures to get involved in the campaign.
