Congress failed to reach a deal to keep the government funded, resulting in a shutdown that went into effect at midnight on September 30. At this time, it is uncertain how long the shutdown will last; the last federal shutdown was 35 days.
Postal workers and postal operations are not interrupted. As an independent agency that is almost entirely self-funded, postal operations will continue as usual with no disruption in pay for employees. Unfortunately, many of our union family across federal agencies will face furloughs or be required to work without pay.
Other critical resources to families and communities across the country will be impacted. The Trump Administration has also made it clear that they yet again plan to act in a callous manner and are instructing agencies to draft plans for permanent layoffs that will further erode the federal government. It is too early to say how this shutdown will play out, but we will continue to provide updated information as we receive it.
