IAM Union Blasts Trump’s 35% Tariff on Canada

WASHINGTON, August 1, 2025 — Brian Bryant, International President of the 600,000-member IAM Union (International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers) andIAM Union Canadian Territory General Vice President David Chartrand issued the following statement in response to President Trump’s 35% tariff on Canada:

“President Trump’s decision to impose a 35% tariff on Canadian goods is reckless and deeply harmful to working families on both sides of the border.

“These tariffs threaten thousands of jobs, disrupt decades of cooperation, and punish the workers who create economic growth across North America.

“We will continue to raise the alarm about the policy of using tariffs at the expense of working families in the U.S. and Canada. We need this administration to develop a trade policy that values U.S. and Canadian workers and puts workers at the center of the discussion.”

The IAM Union (International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers) is one of North America’s largest and most diverse industrial trade unions, representing approximately 600,000 active and retired members in the aerospace, defense, airlines, railroad, transit, healthcare, automotive, and other industries across the United States and Canada.
