IAM Union Mourns Loss of Reverend Jesse L. Jackson Sr.

WASHINGTON, Feb. 17, 2026 — The IAM Union (International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers) mourns the death of the Rev. Jesse L. Jackson Sr., a visionary leader whose lifelong commitment to justice, equality, and the rights of working people impacted our nation and democracy.

The IAM fondly remembers Rev. Jackson’s powerful address to IAM members in Des Moines, Iowa, during his campaign for the Democratic presidential nomination. Speaking at the IAM Union meeting in Iowa (C-SPAN, Jan. 16, 1988), Rev. Jackson offered a clear and principled view of the critical relationship among labor, management, and government. He reminded members that democracy requires balance, arguing that the Reagan Administration had moved too far in favor of management, to the detriment of working families across America.

Rev. Jackson’s solidarity with our members extended beyond words. During the historic Eastern Airlines strike, he walked arm-in-arm with striking IAM members, proudly wearing an “On Strike” sign on the picket line. His presence offered courage, his voice provided hope, and his moral clarity affirmed that the fight for economic justice is inseparable from the fight for human dignity. That moment remains one of the most powerful demonstrations of his unwavering commitment to workers’ rights.

Throughout his life, Rev. Jackson established a vital link between the labor movement and the civil rights movement. He deeply understood that the quest for racial justice cannot be separated from the struggle for fair wages, safe workplaces, and the right to organize. His leadership strengthened our movement, inspired our members, and broadened the coalition fighting for a more equitable society.

On behalf of the IAM, we extend profound condolences to the Jackson family, the Rainbow PUSH Coalition, and all who celebrate the extraordinary life of Rev. Jackson. He taught us that “I am somebody!” and to “Keep hope alive! Today, as we honor his memory, we recommit ourselves to that charge, standing strong for justice, fairness, and dignity for all working people.

The IAM Union (International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers) is one of North America’s largest and most diverse industrial trade unions, representing approximately 600,000 active and retired members in the aerospace, defense, airlines, shipbuilding, railroad, transit, healthcare, automotive, and other industries across the United States and Canada.
