As Midwest Territory General Vice President from 2019 to 2024, Brother Galloway championed innovation, mental-health awareness, and purpose-driven leadership. He leaves behind a powerful legacy of compassion, progress, and unity—one that continues to shape the future of the IAM and the lives of working people across the Midwest and beyond.

“Steve was a leader who always centered the human side of our movement,” said IAM International President Brian Bryant. “He brought compassion, creativity, and courage to everything he touched. From mentoring young activists to redefining what leadership looks like in the labor movement, Steve’s impact on our union is immeasurable. We are stronger because of him, and his legacy will continue to guide us forward. On behalf of the IAM Executive Council, I extend our deepest condolences to his wife, children, and entire family.”

Galloway began his IAM journey in 1986 as a brewer at the Stroh Brewery Company in St. Paul, Minn., joining IAM Local 459 (District 77). Over the next decade, he served as Union Steward, Bargaining Committeeperson, Bargaining Committee Chairperson, and District 77 President, always guided by his belief that every worker deserves dignity, fairness, and a voice on the job.

He was elected District 77 Business Representative in 1998 and Directing Business Representative in 2007, expanding apprenticeship opportunities, negotiating strong collective-bargaining agreements, and strengthening the IAM’s presence across Minnesota’s industrial and service sectors.

In 2008, Galloway joined the IAM Midwest Territory staff as a Special Representative, became a Grand Lodge Representative in 2009, and was appointed Chief of Staff to General Vice President Philip J. Gruber in 2016. His innovative spirit led to the creation of the H.E.L.P.S. (Honoring, Engaging, Lifting, Providing and Servicing) program—focused on empowering local leaders and giving back to communities through volunteerism and charitable work.

As Midwest Territory General Vice President, Galloway brought renewed energy and a forward-looking vision to the IAM. Just months into his tenure, he introduced mandatory mental-health awareness training for IAM Midwest Territory leadership—recognizing early the importance of mental wellness and empathy in sustaining strong workplaces and stronger communities. Under his leadership, the Midwest Territory advanced new strategies for organizing, contract enforcement, and leadership development—building a foundation for long-term growth and innovation. Galloway also helped lead internal efforts to strengthen the IAM’s culture, clarify its mission, and align the union’s values around service, solidarity, and growth.

A defining moment of his leadership came during the 2016 IAM Grand Lodge Convention in Chicago, where Galloway played a key role in organizing and executing the event. His steady leadership helped showcase the IAM’s proud history while laying the groundwork for the union’s future growth and solidarity.

“Steve led with integrity, empathy, and a deep sense of purpose,” said IAM Midwest Territory General Vice President Sam Cicinelli. “He helped redefine what leadership means in our union—listening first, leading by example, and always putting our members at the center of every decision. His work to modernize our structure, support mental-health awareness, and focus on purpose-driven growth will continue to guide us for years to come. Our thoughts and prayers are with his wife, children, and family as we honor his remarkable life and career.”

Galloway’s vision lives on through the programs he built, the leaders he mentored, and the values he instilled throughout the IAM. His enduring influence reminds us that the future of the labor movement is built on courage, creativity, and compassion. He is survived by his beloved wife, Stephanie, and children, Bri and Sean, and who shared in his commitment to service and his deep pride in his IAM Union family.

The IAM Union extends its heartfelt condolences to Galloway’s family, friends, and all who had the honor of working alongside him. His leadership, humility, and belief in the power of working people will forever remain part of the IAM’s proud legacy.

A memorial service will be announced at a later date. The family is requesting privacy at this time.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the IAM’s favorite charity, Guide Dogs of America | Tender Loving Canines dedicated in Brother Galloway’s memory, or a random act of kindness can be done on his behalf.
