Matthew Pyne Appointed IAM Research Economist

IAM International President Brian Bryant has appointed Matthew Pyne, a proven union leader and educator, as a Research Economist in the IAM Strategic Resources Department, effective Feb. 16, 2026.

“Matt has dedicated his career to advancing the interests of IAM members through education, research and frontline leadership,” said IAM Union International President Brian Bryant. “His deep understanding of collective bargaining, workplace safety, and labor economics, combined with his firsthand experience serving our membership, makes him exceptionally qualified for this role. Matt’s expertise will strengthen our Strategic Resources Department and support the critical work we do every day to improve the lives of working people.”

Pyne most recently served as an Educational Representative at the IAM’s William W. Winpisinger Education and Technology Center, a role he held since October 2021. During his tenure, he helped deliver essential training and leadership development programs to IAM members across North America, equipping them with the tools and knowledge needed to represent their coworkers and strengthen their union.

Pyne joined IAM Local 1763 (District 140) in Halifax, Nova Scotia in 2009 and quickly emerged as a respected leader and advocate. Over the years, he has served numerous roles, including shop steward, national contract negotiation team member, contract researcher and presenter, and health and safety representative.

A dedicated leader within the Young Machinists program, Pyne also served as an organizer, presenter and mentor, helping develop the next generation of IAM activists. He was later elected President of Local 1763 for two consecutive terms, representing members across Nova Scotia, New Brunswick, Prince Edward Island, and Newfoundland.

In addition to his leadership roles, Pyne served as Health and Safety Representative at Air Canada and was a nationally selected member of an equipment assessments team that included representatives from the IAM, Air Canada, and the Government of Canada.

Pyne holds a master’s of science in labor studies from the University of Massachusetts Amherst, specializing in union leadership and administration. His academic background, combined with his extensive union leadership experience, provides a strong foundation for his new role supporting IAM negotiations, campaigns, and strategic initiatives through economic research and analysis.

A proud Acadian and fluent French speaker, Pyne brings a deep appreciation for the IAM’s diverse membership and international reach.
