Christopher Roberts, mayor of the City of Shoreline, signed a proclamation celebrating 250 years of the Postal Service and its public mission to move the mail to all 169 million homes and businesses across the country.
Virgilio Goze, a shop steward from our union family at the National Association of Letter Carriers (NALC) Branch #79 in Seattle, WA, facilitated the process in coordination with members of the progressive, grassroots organization Indivisible. Shoreline Indivisible connected Goze with members of Shoreline’s City Council, where he proposed that they participate in the APWU’s National Proclamation Campaign. They were honored to join in on the celebration of 250 years of the public Postal Service and requested sample template language, which the APWU has provided to anyone interested in getting involved in the Proclamation Campaign. The City Council drafted the proclamation, which the mayor then signed on Oct. 29!
Speaking about the importance of the campaign, Goze said, “I would encourage everybody to submit a request for a proclamation from their local and state government entities because the 250th anniversary of the United States Postal Service is a great opportunity to let the public know about our hard work and the attacks that aim to privatize the Postal Service. Most of the politicians and government officials are more than willing to support our public institutions and celebrate the fact that that we are one of the oldest institutions in the country, from before the United States was even formed. So, please submit a request for a proclamation and submit it to the APWU.”
