Nebraska State Council Gains Strength Ahead of Midterm Elections

IAM Union members from across the Cornhusker State recently gathered for the bi-annual meeting of the Nebraska State Council, the political arm of the IAM Union, to coordinate advocacy efforts, elevate member involvement, and prepare for the critical months ahead.

Delegates from Locals 31, 180, 602, 612, 1569, and District 6 met to discuss legislative priorities and hear reports from their locals. A main point of focus of the meeting was the importance of the upcoming midterm elections and the need to elect pro-labor candidates who support collective bargaining rights, fair wages, and retirement security.

Nebraska State Council President Mike Helmink, who led the meeting alongside Secretary-Treasurer Dan Janak, emphasized the critical importance of active member involvement.

“Elections have real consequences for our members and their families,” said Helmink. “If we want leaders who stand with working people, we need to stay organized, informed, and active. Political action is how we protect our contracts and our future.”

Members also heard from IAM Assistant Political Director Ty Richardson, who provided a national overview of the midterm landscape and emphasized the need for coordinated grassroots mobilization. IAM Midwest Territory International Representatives Kevin Murch and Chris Tucker reinforced the Territory’s commitment to supporting Nebraska’s political efforts.

By bringing together members from across the state, the Nebraska State Council reaffirmed that strong political engagement remains essential to advancing and defending the interests of IAM Union members and working families throughout Nebraska.
