The Ohio Postal Workers Union (OPWU) Auxiliary, based in Columbus, OH, is one of the latest organizations to announce that they have secured local government support for the Postal Service during the APWU’s National Proclamation Campaign.
The Columbus, OH City Council passed a resolution, the equivalent of a proclamation in Ohio, on Sept. 29, honoring the Postal Service’s 250th anniversary, recognizing the milestone, and affirming official support for the public Postal Service.

OPWU Auxiliary Treasurer Angela Lyshe jumped at the opportunity to get involved in the campaign after participating in a video conference with APWU President Mark Dimondstein announcing its launch. Lyshe took the news to the next membership meeting, where members readily supported joining the campaign. She immediately began contacting members of the Columbus City Council, who were more than happy to work with her in support of passing a proclamation.
Now that the OPWU Auxiliary has successfully secured a proclamation from the Columbus City Council, Lyshe and the Auxiliary plan to work with local townships next!
“I hired into the Post Office as a civil servant to serve the people. I [then became] a steward to be a voice for my fellow employees. I finally retired and became an advocate for the Postal [Service] as a whole,” said Lyshe. “It is important to remember where we came from and what got us here to be able to have success for our future.”
The APWU launched the national campaign, not only to celebrate the past 250 years of public postal services, but to build public support for our national treasure, good union jobs, and expanding services at a time when the Postal Service is facing an existential threat from a presidential administration and out of touch billionaires who are openly hostile to public services, and a new postmaster general with ties to the private-shipping corporation, FedEx.
With deep connections to every single community across the country, postal workers move mail to every home and business in America. By partnering with the communities that postal workers serve, the campaign continues to reinforce the need for a public, independent Postal Service, while celebrating the achievements of the USPS for the last 250 years.
The APWU has provided local, state, and auxiliary leaders with sample proclamation language and is encouraging meetings with elected representatives to build support for local resolutions. The APWU also recommends mobilizing postal workers, customers, and community members to attend meetings and speak in favor of the proclamations.
