(DETROIT) – Members of Teamsters Local 2024 at Corewell Health East rallied today alongside Teamsters General Secretary-Treasurer Fred Zuckerman, Michigan Secretary of State Jocelyn Benson, state and local officials, and union allies to demand that their employer end its attacks on
unionized workers.
“It’s no secret that management at Corewell has been disrespecting you and your co-workers for a long time. And now that you’ve become Teamsters, they are all too eager to continue that disrespect,” Zuckerman said. “Well, I’ve got one thing to say to Corewell: buckle up — because you’re in for the
fight of your life.”
In November 2024, Corewell nurses beat back an aggressive $1.7 million union-busting campaign by organizing three-to-one to join the Teamsters. In the months since, corporate management at Corewell Health East has attacked nurses by withholding several economic opportunities that were
given to nonunion employees, including refusing wage increases, withholding bonuses, and denying 403(b) matches.
“We are being attacked by our own employer — but these attacks only pour fuel on the fire within us as pissed off, fed up, and overworked nurses,” said Alyson Zajac, a nurse at Corewell Health East in Dearborn.
Next week, Teamsters will begin contract negotiations with Corewell Health East for the first collective bargaining agreement for nearly 10,000 nurses.
