Other contract highlights include 3% annual wage increases, codified parental leave, unlimited sick time, protected severance language, increased budgets for professional development conferences and training and more.“We stood firm in protecting safeguards that support a diverse and representative newsroom,” said the union’s negotiations committee. “We did not let industry uncertainty around technology stop us from securing AI protections. We refused to sell out future workers for short-term promises. And we were able to do this because 100% of our members were unified about what the contract we deserved looked like, and what we were willing to do to secure it.” Kenneth Quinnell Tue, 03/03/2026 - 09:52Continue reading

Bay Area Teamsters Demand Accountability from Waymo Following Blackout Disaster

(SAN FRANCISCO) – Today, Teamsters Joint Council 7 was joined by Service Employees International Union Local 1021 and the International Association of Firefighters Local 798 at a press conference outside San Francisco City Hall calling for good jobs and safe streets. The press conference was followed by a hearing before the Board of Supervisors Land Use and Transportation Committee, where Waymo was compelled to testify about its operational failures during a widespread power outage in December. During the outage, Waymo vehicles froze in place, causing significant traffic jams and public safety threats. Autonomous vehicles (AVs) blocked first responders and delayed firefighters who were responding to the electrical substation fire that caused the blackout. “Waymo’s excuses about why fire trucks continue to be blocked en route to emergencies, or what will happen to the workers they are trying to displace will persist until we force real change,” said Peter Finn, Teamsters Joint Council 7 President and Co-Chair of Teamsters California. “We must continue demanding guardrails and accountability from AV companies while they roam free on our streets, threatening public safety and middle-class jobs.” Since 2022, when Waymo was first approved to operate without a human driver in California, threats to public safety grow by the day. A child was struck by a Waymo outside of his school, and another one killed a Bodega cat in San Francisco. AVs also have a history of driving through construction zones and active crime scenes. In Texas, over the weekend a Waymo blocked an ambulance that was responding to a mass shooting. Waymo has consistently put workers, firefighters, police officers, and the public at risk. “We are in the streets every day, navigating steep, narrow roads to keep our neighborhoods clean and safe. AVs continually cause route disruptions that delay garbage and recycling collection,” said Quentin Booker, a member of Teamsters Local 350 and sanitation driver in San Francisco. “Waymos shouldn’t be impeding hardworking Teamsters from doing their jobs.” This year, Teamsters Joint Council 7 will advance a bold legislative package that prevents the threat of dangerous AVs to public safety, protects workers, and ensures that our state’s economic growth benefits everyday Californians — not just corporate executives and shareholders. Teamsters Joint Council 7 represents more than 100,000 members in 20 local unions across Northern California, the Central Valley, and Northern Nevada. Our members work in freight and delivery, construction, dairy, beverage, rail and ports, food processing, parking, solid waste and recycling, hotels, student transportation, public services, and many other industries. SAVE America Act Threatens Voting Rights for Working Americans

Higher Safety Standards: The Working People Weekly List

Higher Safety Standards: The Working People Weekly List Every week, we bring you a roundup of the top news and commentary about issues and events important to working families. Here’s the latest edition of the Working People Weekly List. Fred Redmond: One Hundred Years of Black Workers Telling the Truth: “In 1917, A. Philip Randolph and Chandler Owen launched The Messenger, a pro-labor, anti-war magazine that connected racism to exploitation and demanded justice for Black workers. Two years later, the federal government responded with tactics of targeted censorship—surveillance, harassment and threats of prosecution—and branded a small Black labor magazine ‘the most dangerous’ publication in the country simply for encouraging Black workers to organize.”How We Organized a Union at Whole Foods: “There were six of us at the first meeting to form a union at Whole Foods in Philadelphia: too many to fit around the coffee shop table, a good sign, so we moved to a restaurant around the corner. We talked about disrespectful managers, low pay, and the loss of paid breaks and health care for part-timers. ‘I’ve seen many wonderful people come and go’ in a decade at the store, said produce worker Ed Dupree. ‘So many of them worked hard and weren’t always treated well, especially after the Amazon acquisition.’”Randi Weingarten: How to Measure Real Progress in Education: “Re: ‘Hope for American Schooling, From Three Red States,’ by Nicholas Kristof (column, Feb. 15): Mr. Kristof is right that the literacy gains in Mississippi, Alabama and Louisiana deserve attention. Students are being taught to read in effective ways, and it shows. It’s not red or blue; it’s a commitment to good curriculums, knowledgeable educators and leadership that gives teachers the time, tools, feedback and investment to make this happen.”Roxanne Brown Breaks Steel Ceiling as New USW Leader in Pittsburgh: “Roxanne Brown is set to take the helm of the United Steelworkers this Sunday, stepping into the union’s top job after a months-long leadership handoff. When she is sworn in, she will become both the first woman and the first person of color to lead the USW, which represents roughly 850,000 members across North America. Her arrival at the top job comes with instant pressure tests in contract talks, political work, and the energy transition that will shape the union’s next four years.”Senators Introduce New Version of Railway Safety Act: “A bipartisan group of U.S. senators led by Maria Cantwell (D-Wash.) and Jon Husted (R-Ohio) introduced a new version of the Railway Safety Act today (Feb. 24). The new legislation includes a mandate for wayside defect detectors, an expanded list of hazardous materials subject to higher safety standards, and a two-person crew requirement. The Railway Safety Act of 2026 is the third version of the bill introduced following the Norfolk Southern derailment and hazardous material release in East Palestine, Ohio, in 2023. The prior versions failed to reach a vote on the Senate floor.”N.J. Union Leaders: Our Energy Crisis Demands Homegrown Solutions, Not Imported Power: “New Jersey is in an energy crisis. Electricity prices have been rising in states across the country, but in New Jersey, which was already home to some of the highest electricity prices, we’ve seen bills go up faster than just about anywhere else. Working families are feeling this crisis month after month when choosing between keeping the lights on or buying groceries.” Kenneth Quinnell Mon, 03/02/2026 - 10:36Continue reading

Teamsters Honor Women’s History Month

The International Brotherhood of Teamsters is proud to celebrate March as Women’s History Month as we honor the sacrifices and achievements of women in our union and our nation. Since our founding in 1903, women have played a crucial role in the growth and success of the Teamsters Union and the broader labor movement. Women labor leaders participated in the very first Teamsters convention and since then have led the Teamsters Union to the forefront of fighting for gender equality in the workplace and society. Every day, Teamsters women who serve as local presidents, business agents, stewards, and rank-and-file members fight and win the best contracts for workers of all backgrounds in all industries. This month and throughout the year, the Teamsters Union celebrates the selfless women who make our union stronger and improve the lives of 1.3 million Teamsters families across the country. Sysco Teamsters in Montana Ratify Contract

(BILLINGS, Mont.) –  More than 225 Sysco drivers and warehouse workers in Montana, jointly represented by Teamsters Local 2, 120, and 190, have ratified a new five-year collective bargaining agreement. The contract delivers major wage gains, significantly higher pension contributions, and Teamsters health care. “The strength of our membership made this agreement possible,” said Jim Sousmas, Secretary-Treasurer of Local 190. “This is the strongest agreement we have ever negotiated at Sysco, and it will greatly benefit our members and their families over the next five years.” The Teamsters represent more than 13,000 workers at Sysco and its subsidiaries nationwide. The Montana agreement follows a credible strike threat, and a unanimous strike authorization vote that forced Sysco management to take workers’ demands seriously. Under the new contract, workers secured a 33 percent wage increase, a 40 percent increase in pension contributions, and Teamsters health care. The agreement at Sysco Montana continues a wave of strong Teamsters contracts won across the company over the past year, including the first-ever regional agreement ratified in December. Earlier this month, Sysco Teamsters in Spokane, Wash., also ratified a new contract delivering a 34 percent wage increase, reduced health care costs, and higher pension contributions. “Across the country, Teamsters at Sysco are securing contracts that set the standard in the food distribution industry,” said Tom Erickson, President of Local 120 and Director of the Teamsters Warehouse Division. “These agreements send a clear message to corporate America and they’re improving the lives of thousands of hardworking Teamsters at Sysco.” Founded in 1903, the International Brotherhood of Teamsters represents 1.3 million hardworking people in the U.S., Canada, and Puerto Rico. Cannabis Teamsters at Cresco Labs Go on Strike

(WYOMISSING, Pa.) – Teamsters at the Sunnyside dispensary in Wyomissing, Pa., have voted unanimously to authorize a strike after the company failed to present a contract that fairly compensates its workers. Sunnyside is a subsidiary of Cresco Labs, a publicly traded multi-state operator in the cannabis industry.  “Our members are united and ready to do whatever it takes to secure a strong contract,” said Bill Shappell, President of Teamsters Local 429. “Sunnyside is part of a rapidly growing industry, and these workers are essential to the company’s success. They will not accept wages and working conditions that fall short of the standards they deserve.” Cannabis Teamsters at Sunnyside are fighting for fair wages and improved hours of work. The strike highlights the growing strength of Teamsters in the cannabis industry and comes after another work stoppage in November, when Pennsylvania Teamsters won the longest-running successful cannabis strike in U.S. history. “The Teamsters are building pathways for cannabis workers to support their families and enjoy a middle-class lifestyle,” said Jesse Case, Director of the Teamsters Food Processing Division. “In countless other industries, people throughout this country can start young and build careers that last for decades. There is no reason cannabis workers should aspire to or expect anything less.” “We’re looking to set the standard of quality for work in the cannabis industry by securing livable wages and promoting long term careers,” said Cobi Motley, a wellness advisor at Sunnyside and Local 429 member. “We can’t accept a contract that creates economic instability in our future. It’s time for the company to come back to the table and offer a fair deal.” Teamsters Local 429 represents workers across several industries throughout northeastern Pennsylvania.
