Working people across the United States regularly step up to help out our friends, neighbors and communities during these trying times. In our Service & Solidarity Spotlight series, we’ll showcase one of these stories every day. Here’s today’s story.

On Saturday, AFL-CIO President Liz Shuler joined the Arizona AFL-CIO, labor-backed candidates and local union members for a canvass kickoff to mobilize southern Arizona voters ahead of Election Day.

More than 100 union members filled the Electrical Workers (IBEW) Local 570 union hall for the event. Alongside President Shuler, IAM Western Territory General Vice President Bobby Martinez, Rep. Adelita Grijalva, Tucson Mayor Regina Romero, Pima County Recorder Gabriella Cázares-Kelly, Arizona AFL-CIO Executive Director and Secretary-Treasurer Fred Yamashita, and Pima Area Labor Federation Chair Cecilia Valdez fired up the crowd. After their remarks, union members attended an election protection training before heading out to knock doors and talk to voters.

“Elon Musk has poured $276 million into political efforts since July,” said Shuler. “One man. More than a quarter of a billion dollars. Let me tell you something: He can buy Twitter, he can buy his rocket ships, but we sure as hell aren’t going to let him buy our elections. Working Arizonans are not for sale.”
