Service & Solidarity Spotlight: Secretary-Treasurer Fred Redmond Speaks at Charlotte Canvass Launch with Roy Cooper and SEIU Leaders
Working people across the United States regularly step up to help out our friends, neighbors and communities during these trying times. In our Service & Solidarity Spotlight series, we’ll showcase one of these stories every day. Here’s today’s story.
AFL-CIO Secretary-Treasurer Fred Redmond joined the North Carolina State AFL-CIO and the Charlotte-Metrolina Labor Council for a canvass launch in Charlotte on Sunday. He spoke alongside SEIU Executive Vice President Joseph Bryant, SEIU Local 32BJ Executive Vice President Jaime Contreras and U.S. Senate candidate Roy Cooper.
With just two weeks until Election Day, volunteers heard from the speakers before heading out to knock doors. The event brought together faith leaders and members of Workers United—an SEIU affiliate—and other unions.
“There’s no sitting this [election] out,” Redmond said in his remarks to union volunteers. “Our future is on the ballot. Our freedoms are on the ballot. The freedom to join a union. To earn a living wage. To access health care. The very freedom to vote….It all comes down to us. Every door, every call, every vote….Let’s secure a future that works for all of us. Everyone included. No one left behind.”
“Workers in this state are sick and tired of politicians putting billionaires first while we struggle to make ends meet,” said North Carolina State AFL-CIO President Braxton Winston. “Through forging partnerships with faith communities and mobilizing around the kitchen table issues that matter the most to voters, our labor movement is playing a key role in electing candidates who will truly fight for working families. We’ve been knocking doors since spring to build the decisive momentum necessary to send Roy Cooper to Washington, D.C., so he can deliver for the workers who power this state.”
