Solvang Teamsters Win Strike, SecureNew Contract

(SOLVANG, Calif.) – After five weeks on strike, the City of Solvang workers have unanimously ratified a new collective bargaining agreement. The members of Teamsters Local 986 secured significant economic improvements, bringing an end to a hard-fought labor dispute.

“This agreement is a testament to the determination and solidarity of the hardworking Teamsters who serve the City of Solvang,” said Jeff Lee, a business representative for Local 986. “Our members stood together for five weeks, not just for themselves, but for the principle that public service deserves to be valued and respected. Their courage and commitment to one another made this agreement possible.”

The strike demonstrated the determination of Solvang’s public employees to secure fair compensation and the respect they deserve for the essential services they provide to the community. The new agreement is pending final approval by the Solvang City Council at its October 26 meeting.

“Not one member crossed the picket line during this five-week strike. That speaks volumes about the strength and unity of this group,” said Ray Whitmer, Secretary-Treasurer of Local 986. “Our members stood their ground, fought for what they deserved, and secured a contract that recognizes the value of their work. This is what Teamsters solidarity is all about.”

Teamsters Local 986 represents nearly 30,000 members across the western United States, Hawaii and Guam. For more information, visit www.local986.org
